Bringing Down A Dictator
Thursday, April 29 | 6 p.m. | FAC
Hosted by Colorado Springs World Affairs Council | Free admission
FILM: The award-winning documentary, Bringing Down a Dictator, documents the nonviolent defeat of Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic in October, 2000. Massive civil disobedience, led by a student movement, resulted in a dramatic triumph for democracy.
The student movement called Otpor! (“Resistance” in Serbian) audaciously demanding the removal of Milosevic, recruiting where discontent was strongest, in the Serbian heartland. Their weapons were rock concerts and ridicule, the internet and email, spray-painted slogans and a willingness to be arrested. Otpor students became the shock troops in an army of human rights, pro-democracy, anti-war, women’s groups, and opposition political parties. Their slogan: "He’s Finished!"
Trained in nonviolent action, they forged a unified political opposition, fought to stop vote fraud, and systematically undermined police and army loyalty. When Milosevic refused to accept defeat at the polls, the opposition called a general strike, and as normal life ground to a halt, Serbs by the hundreds of thousands poured into the capital to seize the Federal Parliament.
The one-hour documentary is narrated by Martin Sheen.
LECTURE: Srđa Popović was a student leader and founder of the Otpor! (“Resistance”) movement that was instrumental in bringing down Milosevic. As an experienced nonviolent movement leader, he leads workshops around the world in strategic nonviolent resistance. He is an active member of the Democratic Party in

Rotary International is the world’s oldest service organization. As Chair of the Rotary Peace Centers Major Gifts Initiative, Dr. Edward Blender has helped to raise over $45 million dollars to endow this world-wide program to educate professionals in peace and conflict resolution. His passion for the Rotary Peace Centers is matched only by his desire to make each and every individual person that he meets share in his belief that 'Peace is Possible'. A retired dentist, Eddie is also a member of the Rotarian Action Group of Dental Volunteers.
Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution
Each year, the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International funds 110 mid-career professionals for studies in peace and conflict resolution. The program is established at eight prestigious universities around the world.
The Rotary Peace Centers welcome up to 60 graduate students each year from various countries and cultures. The Centers offer these individuals the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in international relations, peace studies, conflict resolution, public administration, sustainable development, or a related field at seven universities throughout the world.
A professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution is also offered for 50 Fellowships (short-term studies) at an additional Rotary Peace Center in Chulalongkorn, Thailand.
In addition to providing advanced educational opportunities for future world and community leaders, the Rotary Peace Centers also advance research, teaching, publication, and knowledge on issues of peace, conflict and its resolution, and world understanding.
Rotary Peace Fellows are leaders playing a hands-on role in promoting national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict throughout their lives, in their careers, and through service activities.
Safe Passage Door
June 1 - 15 | FAC Lobby
Safe Passage is a nonprofit organization helping children in the Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak region heal from sexual abuse. A door created to represent the organization in the community as part of the Stop Family Violence Coalition's Door Project will be displayed in the FAC Lobby June 1-15.
The Safe Passage door, painted by Todd Morrison, captures the concept that family violence is something people tend to turn away from. This door was displayed at the World Arena Oct. - Nov. 2009 as part of the SFV Awareness Campaign. The doors will also be on display at the Home and Garden Show March 5-7 and around town in April.
