All My Sons
March 19 - April 4
Conflict | Resolution opens in the SaGāJi Theatre with the Fine Arts Center Theatre Company’s production of All My Sons, the classic Arthur Miller drama set in post-World War II America.
All My Sons chronicles the lives of the Keller and Deever families just after the conclusion of World War II. Joe Keller, and neighbor Herbert Deever, ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. Deever was sent to prison because the firm turned out defective parts, causing the deaths of many soldiers. Keller went free and became wealthy. The twin shadows of this catastrophe and the fact that one of two Keller sons was reported missing during the war, dominate the action.
As local families yearn for the safe return of their loved ones and more is learned about potentially unethical government contracting practices in Iraq, this Tony Award winning drama couldn’t be more relevant. There will be audience “Talk Backs” after the Thursday night performances with Pikes Peak Behavioral Health Group therapists.
Cuong Vu Concert | Poetry Slam
Wednesday, April 7 | 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Internationally renowned trumpeter Cuong Vu is a Grammy winning jazz musician who has been hailed as leader of a generation of innovative musicians. A truly unique musical voice, Cuong has lent his trumpet-playing talents to a wide range of artists including Pat Metheny, Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, Dave Douglas, Myra Melford, Cibo Matto, Mitchell Froom, and Chris Speed. Cuong has carved out a distinctive sonic territory on the trumpet while blurring all stylistic borders.
Now, Vu performs with speak, an electrifying new band from Seattle. Following his critically-acclaimed release Vu-Tet (2007), he has teamed up with some of the most remarkable young composers and improvisors to emerge from the emerald city since the 1990s. Their performances in Denver, Colorado Springs and New York City in April will mark the release of their self-titled debut CD on Origin Records, “speak”. With a musical pathway that reflects Vu's own aesthetic trajectory, speak combines elements of heavy metal and classical music with studiously cultivated jazz sensibilities. The band’s omni-dimensional compositions and ever morphing improvisations are nothing less than inspiring.
This performance in relation to Conflict | Resolution is part of an ongoing collaboration between the FAC and UCCS in which musicians perform in response to the FAC’s exhibitions of visual art. cuongvu.com
