Drawing the Cast
The traditional method of learning to draw as developed in France (17th-19th Centuries) was to draw from plaster casts of ideal sculptures. Learn the basics of this approach to drawing and lay a solid foundation for the study of proportion and value. Proceed slowly and work extensively on one or two cast drawings to be completed by the end of the session. Supply list. Ages 16-Adult

Drawing I
Drawing is a learned skill and everyone can do it. Begin with contour drawings and progress through modified contour, shape, negative shape, perspective, shading and texture. Colored Pencil Magic
Drawing is a skill anyone can learn and this class is designed especially for beginners. Using colored pencils, students will experiment with the basics of using color to make one or more finished drawings. Create both realistic and abstract works of art. Right Brain Drawing
Based on the premise that anyone can learn to draw; a process of accessing the right side of the brain, to allow one to “see” rather than “know” what one is trying to draw. This is done by using various techniques to “trick” our usually dominant left brain into letting the right side take over. Some assignments include contour drawings, drawing upside down, value studies in charcoal and color pastels. Supply list. Ages 16-Adult

Sunday at the Museum: Abstract in Art

Thick Paint: A Day with Van Gogh
1-Day Workshop
Spend time with Van Gogh and others who create their statements with lots of paint. Start with small paintings and simply subjects. Apply a lot of paint on these small pieces and choices in technique will be much greater. This workshop will lead students to think in a more painterly way the paint itself becomes the expression of form and light. Bring student grade oils for this class, as well as your regular pigments. Work from floral still-life, instructor photographs or bring your own. This is also a great opportunity to try a new portrait technique. All levels welcome. Supply list. Ages 16-Adults

Basic Painting: Monochrome
Learn the basics of oil painting by using only black, white and the values in between. Explore color theory, color mixing and increasing color sensitivity. Color mysteries will be solved in the development of a useful color chart. Learn the subtleties of value, intensity and color temperature and how to put this knowledge into practice in any media. Use this solid knowledge to confidently create colors from subtle whispers to intense drama, whether matching a color from a photo, from life or to a concept in the artist’s inner vision. Use inexpensive oil pastels as the most efficient medium to develop the chart, then put it to work in a painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, bring your medium of choice). All levels welcome. Photographic Lighting- Flash 101
Designed to teach you how to use your external flash for your DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera. Basic physics of light, color of light and flash exposure will be discussed and demonstrated. At the end of this class, you will be able to use your flash for maximum effect for both indoor and outdoor lighting situations. Introduction to 3D Modelling

Teacher In-Service Training Series
The FAC Teacher Training Institute offers professional development for elementary, middle and high school teachers interested in extending the range of experiences in the art room, special education and general classroom. Professional development links the arts to the core subjects in compliance with the Colorado State Board of Education State Standards and Curriculum. Practicing artists and educators demonstrate specific hands-on projects and make cross-curricular links. Instruction and classroom lesson plans will be provided by Colorado State Licensed professional instructor Nancy Fraser-Coco certified in Art K-12.
Please contact the Staff Development Coordinator within your district, prior to registration to apply for reimbursement and approval. Please note: All in-service courses have been approved for recertification credit of .5 semester hours = 8.0 clock hours and 1 semester hour = 15 clock hours, by PIKES PEAK BOCES. Each participant requesting a certificate for credit must complete an attendance sheet, pay the $5.00 fee for each ½ recertification credit and return to the Bemis instructor. Please allow two weeks to receive certificates.
FAC Fine Art Across the Curriculum:
Collaboration in the Classroom and Multi Cultural Studies
1-Day Workshop
Teacher in-service will provide Classroom, Special Education and Special Teachers with the tools, lesson plans and resource information to establish a fine art learning center which utilizes 3-D manipulatives, collage and story boxes to integrate fine art in conjunction with the FAC 2010-2011 School Tour Program and exhibition schedule. The workshop provides CDE eligible contact hours and an opportunity to test lesson plans at the Bemis School of Art studios. All Teacher Training courses will include a visit to the museum, a review and discussion of museum programs and classroom field trip information. Lesson plans with special education modification suggestions will be provided, incorporating Colorado State Standards and National Visual Arts Standards for Fine Art education.
