Earl Biss:
Between Sky, Earth and Water
July 10 – Nov. 14, 2010
Seagraves Gallery
This exhibition will feature a selection of paintings by prominent American Indian artist Earl Biss, who has played a defining role in contemporary American Indian art.
Biss was a significant contributor to the explosion of Southwestern Art in the last half of the 20th Century and is nationally recognized for his compelling depictions of Plains Indian horsemen, landscapes and changes in seasons.
Distinctive textured and energetic brushwork reflects the artist’s study of Abstract Expressionism, and the sensuous atmospheric light of his paintings is reminiscent of the French Impressionists. The incorporation of diverse artistic styles from around the world, combined with Biss’s emotive representations of Western American Indian life, represent significant steps in the development of Native American art.
