Our first Grand Opening in 1936 was an affair to remember: Martha Graham danced on our stage for the first time outside of New York; Alexander Calder created the sets for an operetta in our theater; and Frank Lloyd Wright lectured on our new building. Seventy years later, we are presenting an even grander affair — an Extremely Grand Opening. Thomas Hoving, the flamboyant former Director of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the “inventor” of the blockbuster exhibition King Tut, reveals all of his escapades in the surprisingly wooly world of international art. John Waters, an outlandish artist and independent film director of such films as Pink Flamingoes, Hairspray and Cry Baby, screens Cecil B. Demented. And Joel Grey tells of his Academy Award-winning performance in Cabaret and his role in the hit Broadway musical Wicked. All of them will join us for our Masterpiece Gala, an elegant dress-up affair that promises to be the talk of the town for the next 70 years!
