Youth Repertory Theatre

drama reigns ... musicals rule ... technicians rock ...

Here are the F.A.C.T.S.

This year, for the first time in Youth Rep history, the showcases will be attended by Industry Professionals:

Performance Students

Performance Students will receive training in:

Youth Rep, now in its eleventh year, is a five-week intensive training program for students 14 to 18 interested in a career in the theatre arts.  The program offers the serious student comprehensive training in acting and performance. The class schedule is rigorous, blending studio classes, lectures, labs, rehearsals and performance experiences.

Susan Dawn Carson, Program Director and Broadway veteran, has assembled a highly qualified and professional teaching staff.  The program is unique in that in addition to studios, labs and classes, students receive mentorship from professional artists; in the studio, in one-on-one tutorials and in the context of producing a full-scale presentation at the end of the program.

Immersive studio training, along with the introduction of skills and techniques through seminars and intensives, prepares students to head into a competitive marketplace.  And, for the first time in Youth Rep history, a team of artistic directors, casting directors, agents and technical directors will be invited to see the final presentations, which will be performed July 15 - 18, 2010.

All performance students are required to audition prior to registration. Audition dates are March 1 & 2 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center, 30 West Dale Street, Colorado Springs 80903.

All perspective students will be considered for both musical numbers and scene work from selected plays.

Prior to your audition time, you must prepare and memorize a short song (appropriate musical theatre or pop music selection) that lasts no more than one minute (16 to 32 bars), and that shows your strengths and vocal range.  You must bring sheet music that is legible and in the correct key.  No boom boxes will be allowed.  An accompanist will be provided.

Memorize a short monologue of your choice, either classical or contemporary, which should not be any longer than one minute in length.

Movement:
In addition to the above, perspective students will also be required to go through a movement/dance segment as part of the audition process. Please bring dance clothing to the audition - something you can move in comfortably, including dance shoes. If you do not own dance shoes, sneakers are acceptable.

When auditions have been completed, the Program Director will contact all those who auditioned within the following two weeks to inform them whether they have been selected for the program. Those selected will then be provided with all of the materials needed to complete registration prior to March 16, 2010.

Technical Theatre classes

Technical Theatre Students

Technical Theatre Students will receive training in:

The Youth Rep Technical Theatre program provides an environment where craftspersons, artisans, and technicians are trained by working professionals for a career in live theatre.  It provides exposure to all areas of technical theatre, and a model of professionalism through the master/apprentice approach to training.

The Technical Training Program is unique in that it offers students an intensive, vocational program of study in technical theatre, in addition to allowing them to participate as the designers of scenes performed at the end of the program. Both introductory and advanced study in the theory and practice of technical theatre are offered, and both are designed to prepare students for a career in the technical crafts of the entertainment industry.

As part of the program’s core, students spend an average of eight hours per day in direct contact with working professionals. Students are also instructed in the basics of self-marketing, portfolio preparation, scholarship application and presentation.  Upon completion of the program, students will have the technical theatre skills necessary to participate as paid interns for upcoming Fine Arts Center Theatre Company main stage productions.

To apply for a technical theatre track please fill out this form and drop it off at the FAC Box Office during normal business hours, or mail it to:

Fine Arts Center
Attn: Chris Sheley, Technical Director, Performing Arts
30 West Dale Street
Colorado Springs, CO, 80903

Once your application has been reviewed, you will be contacted by the program’s Technical Director, who will set up an appointment time for you to come to the FAC for an interview.

After the interview process has been completed, the Technical Director will contact those who have been accepted into the program.
