Beginning Drawing

ENROLLMENT CLOSED - Drawing the Cast
The traditional method of learning to draw as developed in France (17th-19th Century) was to draw from plaster casts of ideal sculptures. Learn the basics of this approach to drawing and lay a solid foundation for the study of proportion and value. Proceed slowly and work extensively on one or two cast drawings to be completed by the end of the session. Supply list. Ages 16-Adult

Explore how drawing is used in sculpture with 2-D techniques to understand 3-D form. By getting familiar with drawing as a tool, you will get a feel for spatial dimensions by studying form on paper. ENROLLMENT CLOSED - Right Brain Drawing
This course is based on the premise that anyone can learn to draw: it is merely a process of accessing the right side of the brain. This is done by using various techniques to “trick” our usually dominant left brain into letting the right side take over. Some assignments include contour drawing, drawing upside down, value studies in charcoal, and two color assignments. Supply list. Ages 16-Adult

Learn to combine basic drawing skills, blending and layering techniques to ‘paint’ with pastels. Discover why pastels are both a drawing and a painting medium. Experiment with the basics of creating light and dark values, seeing shapes, drawing three-dimensionally and creating texture, in order to draw creative works of art. Animal Portraiture

A beginner’s course in the fine art of pastels; learn the basic technique and fundamentals to help build a strong foundation for further explorations into this medium. Beginning Oil

Learn the basics of oil painting by using only black, white and the values in between. Paint simple objects (i.e. sphere, cone) as well as plaster casts as used by the French Academy (17th-19th centuries). Emphasis will be on correct relation of values and on quality paint handling. Pictures in Clay
Take your favorite drawing or photo and learn the secret of sculpting an image in clay using high and low relief techniques. Designed to teach you how to use your external flash for your DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera.  Basic physics of light, color of light and flash exposure will be discussed and demonstrated. At the end of this class, you will be able to use your flash for maximum effect for both indoor and outdoor lighting situations. Though not necessary, a basic understanding of camera principles taught in creative DSLR Photography Level 1 is highly recommended. You will learn how to correct color, density, edit, convert to black and white, batch process hundreds of images at once and many other features using Adobe Photoshop Camera Ran Bridge Program. Designed for those who have learned the basic functions of DSLR Hot Shoe Flash and have a desire to take flash photography to the next level. Learn through practical application how and where to place your flash relative to your subject to create depth and dimension through practical application. Discover how to use your hot Shoe Flash ‘off’ camera and in manual mode to obtain more control of your photos. Introduction to a variety of light modifiers, reflectors and gels will be introduced as well. It is highly encouraged that Flash 101 be completed to take this class. Teacher In-Service Training Series

The FAC Teacher Training Institute offers professional development for elementary, middle and high school teachers interested in extending the range of experiences in the art room, special education and general classroom. Professional development links the arts to the core subjects in compliance with the Colorado State Board of Education State Standards and Curriculum. Practicing artists and educators demonstrate specific hands-on projects and make cross-curricular links. Professional development credit is available for these sessions. Instruction and classroom lesson plans will be provided by Colorado State Licensed professional instructor Nancy Fraser-Coco certified in Art K-12.

Please contact the Staff Development Coordinator within your district, prior to registration to apply for reimbursement. Please note: All in-service courses have been approved for recertification credit of .5 semester hours = 8.0 clock hours and 1 semester hour = 15 clock hours, by PIKES PEAK BOCES. Each participant requesting a certificate for credit must complete an attendance sheet, pay the $5 fee for each ½ recertification credit and return to the Bemis instructor. Please allow two weeks to receive certificates.

FAC Fine Art Across the Curriculum, Literacy, Science and Math
1-Day Workshop
Teacher In-service to provide the Classroom, Substitute, Special Education and Specials Teacher with all the tools, lesson plans and resource information to establish a fine art learning center which integrates fine art into the core curriculum. In-service will be offered in conjunction with the FAC 2009-2010 School Tour Program and exhibition schedule. Teacher Training provides the Classroom, Special Education, Specials and Substitute teacher with CDE eligible contact hours. All Teacher Training courses will include a visit to the museum, a review and discussion of museum programs and classroom field trip information. Lesson plans with special education modification suggestions will be provided which incorporate Colorado State Standards and National Visual Arts Standards for Fine Art education. Teachers will test lesson plans at the Bemis School of Art Studios.
