Programs

Bemis School of Art courses are open to students of all ages and skill levels. From two year olds to the novice, to college-aged vocational art students and retirees, the common thread is a desire to learn and engage in a personal or professional commitment to art studies.

Youth – Arts education cultivates the entire child, gradually building various kinds of literacy. It develops intuition, reasoning, imagination and dexterity into unique forms of expression and communication. In order to provide quality art education and amplify art efforts in area schools, Bemis School of Art applies the Colorado Model Content Standards for Visual Arts to all children’s classes. See class descriptions.

Adult – Adult students range in experience from novice to advanced. Most adult courses are open to anyone 18 years and over unless otherwise noted. Beginning courses offer students an opportunity to explore their creative possibilities. Advanced courses are designed to allow more seasoned students to hone their skills. Unclothed models are often used in our adult courses; therefore all students under age 18 who are enrolled in such adult courses must submit a parental release form or letter. See class descriptions.

UCCS Credit – Selected courses are available for academic credit through the Extended Studies Program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Students must successfully complete their course and additional projects and essays to receive credit. In addition to the Bemis registration requirements, forms and fees, a completed UCCS registration form and $40.00 check payable to UCCS, or credit card number are due at time of registration.

Teachers – Harrison School District #2 inservice credit may be arranged by contacting staff development coordinator, Chris Czajka at 719.579.2028. Please contact the Staff Development Coordinator within your district, prior to registration to apply for reimbursement. Please note: all in-service courses have been approved for recertification credit of .5 semester hours = 7.5 clock hours and 1 semester hour = 15 clock hours, by PIKES PEAK BOCES. Each participant requesting a certificate for credit must complete an attendance sheet, pay the $5.00 fee for each ½ recertification credit and return to the Bemis instructor. Please allow two weeks to receive certificates.

Student Levels

Beginner – Limited or no experience.

Intermediate – Understands the principles of the medium with reasonable proficiency.

Advanced – Exhibits a technical mastery of the medium.

Supplies

The youth program provides all supplies needed unless otherwise noted. Adult students must provide their own supplies. You may pick up a supply list at the Bemis administrative desk or click here. There may be an additional minimal cost collected by the instructor for supplies used by the entire class.

Food and Beverages

Day long courses include a lunch break, and students are welcome to bring a sack lunch into the classroom or dine at the Fine Arts Center’s restaurant, Café 36. Otherwise, food and beverages are generally discouraged in the studios during class.

Gift Certificates

Gift certificates are available in any denomination and are good for any class of the recipient’s choice at Bemis School of Art. Purchase a great gift today at the administrative desk of Bemis or call 719.475.2444.

Support Bemis School of Art

As a non-profit art school Bemis is funded entirely through private donations and tuition. You can help Bemis carry out its mission of arts education by adding on a $10, $25, or even $200 tax-deductible donation to your tuition payment this semester.
