An Extremely Grand Opening press release

Our first Grand Opening in 1936 was an affair to remember: Martha Graham danced on our stage for the first time outside of New York; Alexander Calder created the sets for an operetta in our theater; and Frank Lloyd Wright lectured on our new building. Seventy years later, we are presenting an even grander affair — an Extremely Grand Opening. Thomas Hoving, the flamboyant former Director of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the “inventor” of the blockbuster exhibition King Tut, reveals all of his escapades in the surprisingly wooly world of international art. John Waters, an outlandish artist and independent film director of such films as Pink Flamingoes, Hairspray and Cry Baby, screens Cecil B. Demented. And Joel Grey tells of his Academy Award-winning performance in Cabaret and his role in the hit Broadway musical Wicked. All of them will join us for our Masterpiece Gala, an elegant dress-up affair that promises to be the talk of the town for the next 70 years!

The Unveiling of our New Museum

The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center propels itself into a new era with the unveiling of its new two-story, 48,000 square-foot museum building of entirely original design and construction. Designed by award-winning architect David Owen Tryba, the spacious galleries of the new museum will present the finest exhibitions traveling the world today. The FAC’s historic spaces have been beautifully renovated, and our building now sparkles with three Dale Chihuly chandeliers. Discover why so many are already describing the Fine Arts Center experience as unforgettable.

This is our finest achievement.
David Owen Tryba, Project Architect

The Fine Arts Center’s Permanent Collection

The FAC’s collection of Southwestern art has been described as the finest in America. The quality of its modern collection was once compared to that of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. And the FAC’s million dollar collection of Dale Chihuly glass is not only one of the largest in the world but includes the historic Orange Hornet Chandelier. See one of the finest art collections in America, installed for the first time in our magnificent new galleries.

I don’t think there’s anything that communicates better than art—it is quicker than language and clearer than philosophy.
Frederick R. Weisman

The Eclectic Eye: Pop and Illusion
Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation

The FAC has presented blockbusters in the past, but this is the single most important exhibition to ever travel to Colorado Springs. The Weisman Collection is often cited as the finest collection of Modern Art in private hands. Trace the evolution of Pop Art in America, and see unforgettable works by many of the best-known artists of the 20th century, including David Hockney, James Rosenquist, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol.

The Weisman Collection is high on my list of the finest in the nation—everybody should rush to see it!
Thomas Hoving, former Director, Metropolitan Museum of Art
