When did your interest in the arts begin?
When we moved into our home in southwest Colorado Springs, the woman who originally built the house was a mountain climber and owned many pieces of art by Colorado artists. We liked the idea of having artwork in our home by local artists so we began looking in antique shops for historical pieces.
Why did you become a member of the Fine Arts Center?
Many years ago, we bought a piece of artwork in an antique store and wanted to learn more about the artist. We discovered that the artist, Charles Bunnell, was part of the Broadmoor Art Academy which was the predecessor to the Fine Arts Center. As we learned more about the Broadmoor Art Academy and the many artists that worked and studied right here in Colorado Springs, we were hooked and joined the Fine Arts Center.
What has been one of your favorite experiences at the Fine Arts Center?
We really enjoy the Learn to Look workshops and try to attend most of them. The latest workshop on the artists of Santa Fe and Taos has been one of the most informative and enjoyable. It has inspired us to head south and visit the historical sites of these renowned art colonies.
What is your favorite work of art at the FAC?
Janice: My favorite piece currently on display is Black Bears in Aspen by Buck Dunton. The scene is of a momma bear and her two cubs in the woods on a vibrant autumn day. As the viewer, it’s as though you just happened upon them … maybe you rustled some leaves or stepped on a twig, but Momma has turned slightly and is looking at you. She’s not upset but she’s making it clear that she knows you’re there. It’s a very serene and intimate moment in time.
Jack: I based my choice on what is being exhibited now and in particular on what is in the current Frank Mechau legends exhibit. I really like Mechau’s Autumn Roundup (oil on canvas). The scene is a beautiful western landscape with lots of cowboy action, and fits one of my most important criteria for paintings I like: “I want to be there”.
What else do you like to do for fun in Colorado Springs?
We like to play golf, hike in the beautiful open spaces and, of course, go to antique shops.
