Meet Our Nov Member of the Month: Vivian McWhorter

Why did you become members of the Fine Arts Center?

When we moved here from Iowa, my husband and I felt belonging to The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center would enrich our experience in our new community.

When did your interest in the arts begin?

My interest in art was sparked during a class visit to the Des Moines Art Center when I was a seventh grader. I was fascinated by an abstract painting of a car windshield in the rain.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at the FAC?

We had a “Storage on Display” exhibit several years ago that was the most interesting ever. There were whole map drawers of Hispanic and Native American jewelry to pull out and admire, shelves and shelves of baskets and pots to compare and contrast, lovely weavings from the Southwest, Mexico and Guatemala that were a feast to the eyes. I was in love with it all.

What is your favorite work of art at the FAC?

As a member of the Fine Arts Center for about forty years and a docent for more than half of that time, I cannot name just one favorite. The Taylor Collection intrigues me and I am delighted by the Mashburn/Marshall Tactile Gallery.

What else do you do for fun in Colorado Springs?

I like to hike, paint, bake, read and socialize.
