Meet Our Sept Members of the Month: Gary and Sally Conover

Why did you become members of the Fine Arts Center?

We became members because we love art, we believe in the arts, and we want to support our Community. We believe the Fine Arts Center is an important institution in the history and the future of the Pikes Peak region.

When did your interest in the arts begin?

As children we were each exposed to the arts. Gary grew up in Colorado Springs and attended the Bemis School of Art. Sally grew up in Iowa and has always adored art and music. Sally also enjoys singing and playing her piano.

What has been one of your favorite experiences at the FAC?

Last Spring, we enjoyed taking classes at the FAC’s Bemis School of Art on the life and art of Georgia O’Keeffe. Then last June, we went on the FAC trip In Georgia’s Footsteps to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico and the O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was wonderful! The experience was then highlighted by viewing the O’Keeffe exhibit here at the FAC last Fall.

What is your favorite work of art at the FAC?

I am particularly fond of the Chihulys. Gary appreciates the extensive Taylor Museum collection of New Mexican Santos and Spanish Colonial art.

What else do you do for fun in Colorado Springs?

We both love music and regularly attend concerts of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic.   We enjoy traveling, especially around the Southwest and throughout Europe. Sally loves gardening, cooking, reading and is learning to speak Italian. Gary’s favorite hobby is birdwatching and he is fascinated with Van Briggle pottery.
