Drawing from the Masters
9 Day Excursion February 17-25, 2015
The Sassi Italy Tours "Drawing from the Masters" course is a nine day art history, history, and drawing intensive which runs concurrently within Doug Sassi's renowned Italy tour. The focus is on both ancient and Renaissance Italian societies, their history and cultural values, and their continued influence on the modern West. We will visit the major museums of the greatest cities in Italy, discuss the history of the great Italian artists and their patrons, and draw directly from the available priceless cultural artifacts contained therein. The course aims to instill in the participant a sense of the long shadow cast on modern society by both ancient Italy and its Renaissance masters and to lend a perspective only available to those experiencing Italy’s treasures firsthand. This course will be of interest both to the casual traveler and the student of drawing and painting; we will instruct the participants on the value of examining the formal choices made by the artists of the High-Renaissance and offer a deeper examination of the historical and political underpinnings that moved their works. The direct observation of nature and of the great works of the masters is a highly rewarding and highly valuable journey into visual thinking and the basics of representation. It is open to all skill levels and both to aspiring artists and non-artists alike.
